Horizon Maths

Annual conference on applied and/or industrial mathematics topics

The Paris Mathematics Sciences Foundation facilitates meetings between mathematicians from its laboratories and scientists from either the industrial world or other scientific disciplines thanks to Horizon Maths.

2026 Edition: Mathematics and Music

The 2026 edition ofHorizon Maths took place on Thursday April 9 and Friday April 10, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Amphitheater Hermite of the IHP (11 rue Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris 5th). Organized under the leadership of Moreno Andreatta (CNRS, University of Strasbourg), the conference will have the theme: Mathematics and music.

The first editions of the Horizon Maths event were co‑organized by the Foundation in partnership with a company (EADS in 2010, AREVA in 2011, TOTAL in 2012, GDF SUEZ in 2013, IFP Energies nouvelles in 2014, IBM France in 2015, Huawei in 2017).

In this very "industry"-oriented configuration, the major themes of reflection around which the presentations are structured are proposed and discussed between the Foundation and the company, who also agree on the choice of speakers from the academic world and industry, of which they share the solicitation. The establishment of the final program is done in a concerted manner. The event is generally hosted by the co-organizing company.

Since 2018, the conference format has become more flexible. The 2018 edition, although also focusing on industrial applications, was not designed in partnership with a particular company. The 2019 and 2022 editions concerned interactions of mathematics with another scientific discipline (respectively chemistry and astrophysics) in an academic and (to a lesser extent) industrial context.

In all cases, in addition to the conferences, ample space is given to discussions between participants, allowing them to clarify certain points, to go further on the themes addressed or to initiate a more in-depth exchange which may continue after the event. The conferences are filmed, with the agreement of each speaker and their company. The videos are then broadcast on the Foundation’s website.

No Horizon Maths in 2023

In fall 2023, the FSMP decides to exchange the dates of its annual conferences Mathematics in Motion and Horizon Maths: the first will now be held in the fall, the second in the spring. This transition year therefore saw two Mathematics in Motion conferences (spring and fall) while the Horizon Maths audience had to wait until spring 2024.

The Horizon Maths 2022 day, on the theme of Mathematics and Gravitation, will take place on Tuesday December 6, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sorbonne Université (4 place Jussieu 75005 Paris), Amphithéâre 25. This conference is organized under the leadership of Jérôme Pérez (ENSTA Paris) and Emmanuel Trélat (Sorbonne University).
